At the oldest village in Portugal, handmade textile production and embroidery is an activity carried out predominantly by women. Their unique set of skills and knowledge is passed on from mother to daughter. A traditional form of textile production that goes back many generations has been preserved in this way.
Although the practice is still alive, the livelihood of Portuguese artisans is now under threat due to urban migration and industrialisation.
The Oldest Village proudly supports the extraordinary work of local mums and daughters, and endorses ethical and sustainable methods of textile production.
